Termites - The Silent Destroyer

Termites can be one of the most serious problems a homeowner can face.  They often are lurking and thriving in your home with no immediate signs of damage.  They consume cellulose which unfortunately is found in structures like trees and wooden support beams in your home.  Their colonies can grow to incredible sizes; sometimes numbering in the millions.  Queens lay as many as 1000 eggs a day and are most active in late Spring and early Summer.  In addition there are over 2000 known species of termites so it's important to know which one could be causing the infestation.   

Signs You May Have a Termite Problem:

Termites can be anywhere so it's important to know if and when you have a problem.  Here are just a few common signs to look for:

1. Cracked or bubbling paint
2. Temporary swarm of winged insects in your home
3. Hollow wood
4. Mud tubes on walls, wooden beams, or in crawl spaces

Precautionary Measures:

• Removing stacked up firewood from foundations or crawl spaces
• Removing wood based debris items like tree stumps
• Place metal screens on outside vents
• Frequently inspect wooden fences and other similar types of structures
